Myofunctional Therapy

At Frisco Feeding & Speech Therapy, we provide myofunctional therapy for children 4 years of age and older. Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) are caused by muscular dysfunctions that negatively impact the muscles of the face and mouth. Specifically, OMD’s are related to abnormalities of how both the structures and muscles function and appear. OMDs can occur across the lifespan and present themselves in a variety of ways. OMD’S may cause functional and structural impacts such as improper resting posture, chewing and swallowing disorders, dental malocclusions, sleep disordered breathing, and/or speech sound issues. Common causes and culprits of myofunctional issues may stem from prolonged bottle use, thumb sucking, mouth breathing, upper airway obstruction, or structural differences of the orofacial complex.

Who would benefit from Myofunctional Therapy?

Children with speech sound distortions (such as a lisp), chronic open mouth position (mouth breathing), history of a lip or tongue tie, dental abnormalities, and tongue thrust while speaking or swallowing.

I believe every child has endless potential and is not defined by their area of need.   Fostering individual change is possible when a therapist is passionate about their calling and given the resources to implement their expertise.  In this way we will positively change the course of life for the children and families we service.

What is the best thing about your job?
Each child presents their own unique strengths and challenges. My favorite part of being a speech pathologist is figuring out how to unlock each child’s potential by utilizing their strengths to alleviate their weakness. Humans have an inherent drive to eat and communicate with one another; being able to foster’s a child ability to enjoy mealtime with family or express their thoughts and feelings is a true joy.
